Objective of presentation

The objective of this presentation is to provide an overview of the workings of the World Trade Organization. Given the limitations of time, the presentation can not be comprehensive in the sense of dealing with all the concepts, principles and rules of the WTO. Nevertheless, the intention is to provide an overview of its functioning in order to provide a good understanding of its basic tasks.

The structure of the presentation is to first review the principles that govern the work of the WTO as well as the background that led to its creation. The presentation then turns to the main agreements of the WTO and the obligations they contain. It addresses how the process of liberalization is achieved in the various areas of world trade. The role and outcome of the different ministerial meetings is described, with particular attention being paid to the meeting in Doha, the launching of the Doha Development Agenda, and the stocktaking exercise at the Cancun Ministerial Meeting. The presentation closes with a series of most frequently asked questions. I hope you enjoy the presentation. back to top
